Do turtles have skin under their shell?

Chris Wilczewski: Not sure about Katts answer. I have seen turtles cut up for food, and the skin seems to connect to the edge of the shell. Some turtles seem to have a thin, skin-like covering on top of the shell.

Lady Laflin: Turtle's skin is attached to the edge of the shell. Underneath the shell is a layer of muscle. The shell is covered on the outside with a layer of protein called keratin. I rehab turtles and have seen this muscle layer under the shell on injured turtles that have been hit by cars and shell pieces are missing. See these web pages for some of the injured turtles that I've rehabbed. Some show the muscle layer:(Beware, kinda graphic!)...Show more

Berry Gilmore: Do turtles have skin under their shell? Is the skin attacked to the shell?

Jayson Brod: Yes, they have skin under their shell. But the skin is attacked by the shell? What are you talking about? Is there a war between the shell and skin or something?

Byron Fortmann: ac! tually yes. So they won't freeze to death when they hibernate.
