Ignacio Imbier: Those who claim that others believe in libertarian free will are creating a straw man so they can knock it down. Here is an explanation of what it means to someone using that straw man:"Freedom as understood in the libertarian sense means that a person is fully able to perform some other action in place of the one that is actually done, and this is not predetermined by any prior circumstances, our desires or even our affections. In other words, our choices are free from the determination or constraints of human nature." http://www.monergism.com/thethreshold/articles/ons...NO one belie! ves free will is free of the constraints of human nature, which is: a creature who lives in a physical world. We must respond to physics; we must respond to our emotions and to our reason; we must respond to things that happen, like a car about to hit us, the death of a parent or child or friend; hunger and thirst; sleepiness; etc. NO one believes we can ignore those. But the straw man in this argument actually calls us 'little gods' if we believe in free will, and that is insulting. "The assumption of free will, so widespread in our culture, in effect sets us up as supernatural little gods, and it’s this assumption that a thorough-going naturalism upsets. " http://www.naturalism.org/atheism.htm#littlegod'Naturalism' is the pitch fork that knocks down the straw man. Naturalism is another name for 'determinist'. Free will "is often mocked by determinists as the 'little gods' hypothesis, the idea that we ourselves are unmoved movers who can kick off a chain of events withou! t being subject to the laws of causality, which is a power tha! t absolutely nothing else in the universe appears to have." http://www.threeminutephilosophy.com/vid_heraclitu...Now you and I both know we can't ignore physics, including our own physical and mental needs, let alone the things that are part of our daily lives. So 'libertarian' free doesn't exist except as a straw man."According to hard determinism, environment, heredity, unconscious impulses, defense mechanisms, and other influences determine people to act the way they do; and because of that, they are not responsible for their actions." That is another straw man--that we because we must eat when we are hungry, or jump out of the way of a moving car, or shower when we are sweaty, or go to the doctor when we are sick--that we are not responsible for our actions. So if I go for a month without a shower and I gross everyone out at McDonald's, it's okay because nature made me dirty so I'm not responsible for being dirty; therefore, I can't be held responsible if I don't shower! , either. But I hate using the phrase 'soft determinism'. Why not just 'the will'? "...that which you call “free will” is your mind’s freedom to think or not, the only will you have, your only freedom, the choice that controls all the choices you make and determines your life and your character." http://aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/free_will.htmlhttp://philosophy.tamu.edu/~sdaniel/Notes/96class4......Show more
